Wow, I just confirmed what you are talking about. Scary.

I just upgraded to MapServer 6.0.2 and Debian 6.0.5. I made a single record,
mulitpolygon shapefile around the IDL and tried your hatching trick. My
CPU's spiked also.

Are people of aware of this?
