Version 6.2 allows you to define multiple label blocks for one feature. Combine that with repeating labels and it might be accomplished that way. For example, you define one label that defines a shield and draw it at one interval, and then another text label that uses the road name. If they have different repeat distances then you can probably avoid collisions. Worth a try...

The MINDISTANCE parameter might also be helpful in thinning labels. For example, let's say your repeat distance for the shields is 50 but your min distance is also 50 that should basically remove every other shield. Choose the same repeat distance for the name and in theory every other computed label point should get a shield, and the others names.

We haven't gone down this road yet ourselves, but I would suggest taking a look at SVG symbols for this type of work.

We're just getting ready to convert our Mapfiles to use the newer versions of MapServer and the SVG symbols are a looking like a good all around solution moving forward.

Hello,

I would like to label my roads layer with a highway shield as well as the street name.  What is the best way to accomplish this with MapServer 6.2?  If anyone has an example .map file that would be great.
