[Journal] Current interest level in OSGeo Journal?

Hi all,

Some of the content can probably be found in SVN, https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/browser/journal (although not all editions are well organized some follow the pattern of https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/browser/journal/volume_12/master_pdf/Master.pdf).

Thanks for the ideas and offers of help (we'll probably need it especially from people more familiar with Zenodo).  I think this is what we need to do to responsibly put the Journal into dormancy.    Before we jump to that, do we want to shop for a new home and interest for the Journal?  My ideas on that are to email the Discuss list and to try connecting in the GeoForAll effort.  Are there any other ideas to continue the Journal that we should explore before putting into dormancy? I'm happy to send the Discuss email.  Helena, I think that you (and maybe Markus and Barend) are somewhat involved in the GeoForAll effort.  Could you see if there is interest there or find the appropriate person to check into that?  The Journal could be reorganized within GeoForAll if there is interest.

I'll send the Discuss email by the end of this week unless I hear otherwise.

After a cursory look, I have to say I can do that only for the two issues I edited (13+14), for which I have my own backups. The other volumes on the Wiki and in the SVN are a total mess, of most I cannot find a final version at all, because in very many cases links are dead (eg this one http://www.osgeo.org/journal/volume2) or point to a wrong place (eg https://wiki.osgeo.org/w/index.php?title=Journal_Volume_7&action=edit&redlink=1). And in some cases the only/actual content seems to be the Wiki and I have no time and knowledge on how to consolidate those into this Zenodo system...

I would propose to preserve all Journal-related  ressources via the open access Zenodo repository (zenodo.org<http://zenodo.org/> -> no costs, professional long term preservation, an open source infrastructure backed by CERN), which is already being used for other OSGeo content, including software, data and publications (https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/DOI).

While we don't have a common strategy within OSGeo (yet) to interlink such ressources, once they have received DOI (Digital Object Identifiers), they can be discovered, referenced and _interlinked_.

We have already have that for OSGeo projects which actively use DOI for software versioning: It's feasible to reference either particular software releases or the whole software project. A reference to the project allows to discover all software releases, and vice verca.

In a similar fashion, the OSGeo journal could be referenced by DOI, or alternatively individual Journal editions. DOI can be obtained via Zenodo, but also other institutions, like NASA, maybe AGU, etc..

The most important thing would be to include the OSGeo ROR (persistent id from the research organisation registry, we have this since early 2023) in the metadata when registering a DOI via a repo:

[The ROR ID can also be added to already existing OSGeo DOI]

This allows in the long run to mine/discover all content preserved in open access repos for OSGeo related content (no matter what it is -> Journal editions, code, data, etc.)

So once there will be renewed interest to reboot the Journal, all resources will be ready and usable.

Barend, thank you for answering the email from Eli, I agree that there seems to be no volunteers to pursue this effort, the conference papers were published through other means, mostly special issues of indexed journals,
but it would be useful to give heads-up on OSGeo discuss that the mail list is going to be closed and the past issues will be archived - I cc-d Peter here maybe he has some suggestions
on suitable repository.

If there are people interested, then perhaps they can have more of a leadership role and re-invigorate the Journal.
