There were a couple of community meetings recently to discuss what to do
with the FOSS4G SotM Oceania Conference this year (meeting notes from 2020
03 12

and 2020 03 05
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wvne-gA4HVfcxhLQDLSq0YuXcP8uryfM9Bx4FLU7UFk/edit?usp=sharing>).
The meetings were attended by people from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and
Samoa.
The group considered options for the conference format using an online poll:

- online only (teleconference like FOSS4G UK 2020
<https://uk.osgeo.org/foss4gukonline2020/programme.html>)
- in-person only (pre-covid conference like FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2019
<https://2019.foss4g-oceania.org/schedule/>)
- hubs (many watch parties or hubs like FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2020
<https://2020.foss4g-oceania.org/#map>)
- Hub and Spoke (central hub with watch parties like Locate21
<https://locateconference.com/2750-2live-site-locations/>)
There was a strong preference for a "Hub and Spoke" model with both keynote
speakers as well as technical presentations.
A Hub and Spoke model is where there is a Central Hub where people can meet
in-person for a normal pre-covid conference, but there are also spokes or
satellite hubs where people can join with people from their city or region
to watch the streaming content from the central hub (or a person could
watch from their own device from wherever they choose). Most people thought
they would be able to attend a satellite hub, and about half thought they
would be able to attend a central hub.
The group endorsed the action to request OSGeo Oceania to "Call for
Proposals" for a hub and spoke conference. I'll forward this action to the
OSGeo Oceania board.
