[OSGeo Oceania] Sponsorship Issues

Hi All

Firstly let me say that I believe that Oceania QGIS must remain fully
independent. We are a vibrant part of a unique organisation within the QGIS
arena which offers so many small businesses and home grown projects an
opportunity to be productive and contributory to the geospatial world.
Through a volunteer approach the QGIS developers and users build within
each of us a spirit that is focused on community good ( Emma's emails )
and that in itself does something for each of us involved and is a strong
driver in keeping progressing and promulgating QGIS.

To borrow a line from Mao Tse Tung there will be many of us who 'walk on
two legs' without any conflict. I have used ESRI products and have had
strong supportive relationships with very good people in dealerships and
ESRI itself. For me that does not conflict with my work with QGIS. They
are separate entities and will remain as such. (Ironically I was not
permitted to present the programmes I was running with schools using QGIS
at a teachers conference because it conflicted with their
major sponsorship... c'est la vie.

Which brings me to the main point of my email. Sponsorship. Could
some of those in Oceania QGIS tell us what they have encountered in trying
to get sponsorship?
What are the difficulties?
What do sponsors expect to achieve in return in real terms?
The reasons that potential sponsors do not take up our requests/offer?
What type of approaches have been made to sponsors that have fallen flat?
What other approaches have been considered and not pursued?

Is there a tête à tête to be had on this?

I have mulled over some options while writing and ditching several response
emails on the Elephant issue. In each I was thinking out what we could do
to make potential non-conflicting sponsors aware of our work, how being
part of our conferences could build client and currently non-client
relationships.

Not wanting to sound like a worn and well-tried record I haven't added
them in here. They may have all been considered and not pursued for good
reasons. If they haven't I'd put them up for consideration and be part of
developing and promoting them.
