You might like to look at this ticket for some ideas on layer hierarchy. I'm not sure why it's closed actually..

I'm currently working this concept for a client so that we can display a hierarchy of WMS layers.  Not very difficult, I'm using a treeview component which allows me to specify the parent of each node.  One thing to keep in mind is that you must keep the layers indexed properly, otherwise the GetMap request (when working with OpenLayer.WMS) orders the layers wrong on the request and some layers are hidden undereath others.

Even though i am unknown and just a lowly user,

I would completly agree to having a grouped layer.  Where you can create layers inside it and turn them all on or off.

I actually think this would be fairly easy.

Hmm, maybe i will try making a .js for this one... good idea.

On the same note of advanced search queries, i think an identify type button would be quite excellent, i hardcoded one into my MouseToolbar.js (OL 2.2 release) with a tied event.

We have discussed sub-layers on the WMC/OWS-Context and Mapbuilder lists.

I think the current idea is to set up a "group" flag for a layer so that
multiple layers can be grouped in a legend in a hierarchical manner.

Could you please expand on your idea of the "Customizable Layer".
