SVG and VML are langage used by Browser to render vectorial image. In 
the case of Vector Layer, OpenLayers uses these langages to render 
features. And what I would like to say is that you are limited by the 
browsers. Have you test your game in chrome, Google's browser ?

If you want to do it faster, you probably have to use mapserver, and 
générate your map server side. But have you test with marker layer ?
