I'm assuming you're opening the HTML from a local filesystem, not an HTTP host? Additionally, presumably your security settings are 'low' or 'completely open', negating IE's default checks of domain restrictions.

In older versions of IE (before 8; possibly only before 7?) you can get away with storing a file on your local disk and opening it, and have access to remote HTTP hosts, under some security settings.

No other browser allows you to do that, and higher IE security settings also do not allow it.

In general, you will need a ProxyHost for all examples/things you actually want to work in the 'real world' -- on a web server where other people can get to them.
