 Hey bartvde, thanks for having discussed it with ahocevar. The patch works
 fine with VML, SVG and Canvas for me for quite some time [1]. My only
 concern was losing the ability to select a font in VML which would
 technically be a regression. The advantage of having the halos probably
 outweighs it though, but that's something that needs to be discussed and
 agreed upon.

 If you're interested in including this in 2.12, I'll clean up the patch
 and create a pull request ASAP. Otherwise, I'd be happy to do it shortly
 after 2.12 so it can be tested over a longer period.
