 @DonaldKerr: wow, great to see that you have taken so much interest in
 this and thanks for the detailed analysis. I'm not in control of getting
 any patches in 2.12 (I'm not a core developer), but you could always
 consider taking mine+your work on VML into your own OL clone on github and
 creating a pull request for it.

 I probably won't have time until the weekend to work on this and it looks
 like the preparations for the first release candidate are in the making.
