[OpenLayers-Users] question about feature selection

i'm having a little problem, wondering if anyone here has any suggestions

i'm currently making a script that when you click on a polygon feature on an
overlay, it reconizes which feature you clicked on and draws an OpenLayers
Vector Polygon around it.  the problem is that for some layers, there are
tens of thousands of polygons its taking too long.  its just takign too long
to go through every polygon and figure out which one you clicked on.

anyone have any suggestions as to how i could speed this up?
