Are you using the OpenLayers.js library as it was distributed, or the 
hosted version, or did you "build" the compressed version of the 
library? The compressed one loads a lot faster, particularly because it 
incorporates all 75+ libraries into a single file, saving your browser a 
lot of small downloads. That in itself may help significantly.
