Chris,
  No, they have each radar type (and warnings) in a separate file.  You just
need to download the gif image you want every 5 minutes and serve it through
mapserver (or something similar) and add it as a layer in OL.  I've been
doing this for 2 years now (though not with OL).  Makes for an impressive
demo.

  One feature (if it isn't already there) that I would love to have added to
the OpenLayers.Layer class would be an auto refresh interval, so that my
maps would automatically reload a specific layer, without needing a recenter
or other move.

I need something like an overlay over our maps to display weather,
wouldn't this just deliver me an entire map tile?
