You might be best to on GeoExt panel. The key to making your code work 
is that you have to create a filter from the search text, set it in the 
protocol and then read from the protocol. From the look of your code it 
seems you think GeoExt is doing some (but obviously not all) of that 
behind scenes. The GeoExt list would know more.
