For future reference: 

I already had a GeoJSON object made in PHP. I used this 
http://westhoffswelt.de/blog/0040_quickhull_introduction_and_php_implementation.html
excellent quickhull algorithm  to get the convex hull of all my points and
fed that to OL to get my regional map.

Not sure of this should be part of OpenLayers itself, but a 'math' framework
to work with OpenLayers to provide this and other functions would be a great
addition/combination.
