I think the original poster's issue must be a different one, since he
didn't seem to be happy with what he found in the link you had posted.

Marc, the issue you ran into is definitely there. And it could
probably be solved by using
https://github.com/openlayers/openlayers/pull/174 instead of a
SelectFeature control.
