Some thoughts. Try to do everything possible with WMS rather than WFS on 
display side. From what you say, I think what you want to do is 
manipulate the SLD. You might like to look at the SLDSelect control and 
associated example. You can also push up an entire SLD body to the 
server for complete control over the display.
