The scripts we wrote are specific to 9.04 only in that some of the
apt-get commands pull packages that may not be available in previous
versions and install repositories for 9.04 (see the sources.list.d
folder in the svn). Most of them will still work for 8.04 though.
The only parts that might be Xubuntu specific is the command to swap in
the desktop background and possibly the creation of the desktop icons(
but I think those should work on Gnome)
While we've tested it on 32bit, I think it might be ok on 64 bit
assuming the packages are available and you might need the ia32 libs
installed.
