Hi Dane,
Arun is the right person to work with on this one. I do not want to
shortcut anything you are doing with him. But, I did observe something.
First, I started a new GISVM virtual machine on click2try as a non-logged in
user. I logged into the GISVM desktop as the user "user". I am able to
open a terminal window. Then, I notice that if I try to start Mapnik from
the icon it fails the first time. But, if I try to start it again, it
succeeds.
After that, I notice that uDig seems to start up successfully.
I don't know if this helps or not.
Regards,
Tom

Hello Arun,
I just tested the VM linked from the public announcement.
It looks as if you have restricted the use of the terminal? That
essentially breaks the Mapnik demo because it launches in a terminal window
to show the server process. I also cannot open a terminal on the VM now to
be able to debug...
If I click the icon "Start Mapnik & TileLite" I get:
"Failed to Execute default Terminal Emulator: Input/Output Error"
Also, double-clicking the uDIG icon does nothing.

Hello Arun,
Yes, the new VM works with Python 26. And therefore the Mapnik Python 2.6
bindings now work.
And with this small fix (which I've been waiting to make), the demo
application now works perfectly:
http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/changeset/2684
Thanks!

Hello Dane,
Could you please help us by trying again "python" command from new instance
vm rather then using existing '20-74'. ?

I wonder if the read-only user mode is the culprit.

I just tried the latest VM '20-74' and now see a Segmentation Fault when
running the default python.
Open a terminal and type 'python' and this is what you get:
user at osgeo-gisvm20-74:~$ python
Segmentation fault
but python2.5 works:
user at osgeo-gisvm20-74:~$ python2.5
>>> # all good...
Really odd, I've never seen a segfault like this with python after just
starting the interpreter.

Hello Team,
Maintenance and bug fix activity is going on click2try-GISVM. Please
don't try the GISVM on click2try for some time. Once we are done with
maintenance activity, we will post update on this mailing list.
