Bastian,
If possible, you will probably do better to use a WFS from mapserver. 
The reason is that as far as I'm aware, mapserver doesn't require the 
user to start the service before using it, while goeserver does.

If you do need to make use of geoserver, then ensure that you include 
"start geoserver" in the steps in the quickstart.
