 will be limited to imagery and floating point raster data, which is good
 because they are generally big files which don't compress well.

 I tried other categorical raster and vector (+dbf) but the shapefiles are
 lossy. fortunately those compress rather well so don't hog the disc space
 as much.

 things like slope,aspect,shaded-relief can be regenerated on the fly from
 original sources, so can be dropped in favour of a regeneration script.
