Elena,

I have actually tried this with a fresh machine. What I advice is running:

sudo apt-get update (makes sure you have the most recent sources)
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-x11 virtualbox-guest-dkms
virtualbox-guest-utils
This will install X11 support, which means that your display will
resize along nicely, and it will install the necessary driver for
mounting a shared drive.

The other option is as explained on the page you refer to. Did you get
any errors while executing the scripts? Can you post the output of the
install script?

This is no longer true. Since December 2010 there is actually only one
version of Virtualbox and you can install an extension pack which is
not open source. This only contains extra drivers for the host system.
I actually tested and found out that I get the same performance for
usb using the ubuntu install on the host system and using the
virtualbox guest additions.

It would be nice that someone else could also verify these
observations. In that case we could just install these packages before
creating the VM, which would be much easier for our users.

Kind Regards,

Johan
