 Some progress finally: since patching libtiff5 did not work as expected, I
 have created a patch that reverts the Ubuntu update. After testing this
 patch on top of RC1, we have a working QGIS again.

 I am building a new nightly iso to confirm the fix and will update this
 ticket.
