You can pretty easily convert from various PDAL supported formats to
Alembic using Houdini. We've started building some Houdini tools to
integrate PDAL and I'm halfway considering turning it in to a
full-blown GUI for PDAL.

Native support for Alembic inside of PDAL, for both point clouds and
meshes, would be pretty interesting though.
