Hi Peter,
I wanted to write to thank you for your thread about filter.assign.  I'm new to PDAL (first day using the tools) and was struggling with getting filters.assign to work.  Your comment where adding the filters.ferry to the pipeline was the solution to my problem as well.
I have an xyz text file of bathymetric data I want to convert to LAZ.  I also wanted to populate dummy intensity and pointsourceid's in the file.  If I had to guess as to why, it seems these attributes did not get created as instances with the reader.text, since the attributes were not present.   I needed to create the instances with filters.ferry, before I could assign them if I'm understanding it correctly.
