Nothing and the mailing list is the primary communication medium, but I know that not everyone is comfortable posting on mailing lists, and I was looking to provide an alternative venue for asynchronous chat.

It seems that PDAL has to apply for a sponsorship to allow anonymous anyone to join the instance. I have done so and will report back if it is approved. This is why people are not able to get into it.
