It is a one-line change in the makefile, a ./ is added:

RUNCP=$(POSTGIS_BUILD_CLASSPATH)$(CPSEP)./postgis.jar

Not in production yet, but I installed them on a testbed machine, and
they seemed to work fine. My main developer machine uses hand-compiled
PostGIS because I have several PostGIS versions installed in parallel.

Do you have apt/sources.list entries for postgis?

What about uploading your packages to experimental repository of debian
(or maybe even into unstable so we could get postgis into sarge before
it is "stabilized")?
