 Okay I've just written a prototype patch for the PGXS makefile which
 allows subdirectories under contrib/ and submitted it to the pgsql-hackers
 list. I'd suggest we wait for feedback on the patch, and then when it's in
 a suitable form we simply ifdef...endif an include to an external file
 containing the aneurism-inducing Makefile hackery so it can be easily
 removed in the future.
