 Hmmm, definitely not seeing this on Centos.  An automated build script
 runs in Hudson on a Centos 5.2 box on every commit to trunk.  I have yet
 to see it hang or fail a build due to image generation.

 Maybe this is unique to imagemagic on OS/X?
