 +1 for putting under unit testing

 wouldn't change anything until things are regress-tested.

 Oh, while porting to 1.5 I've seen the _same_ bug is in
 point_in_ring_tree.
 Should I blindly fix that as well or leave alone ? Did you mention it is
 unused ?
