(I have only been dimly paying attention the last year or so due to lack
of spare time, to the point where I have not even managed to package
postgis 2 for pkgsrc.)
Not understanding the details, I find the notion of discussing dropping
support for the current stable release of a dependency to be a bit odd.
When 3.4 is actually released, it will take some time to get it into
packaging systems, which have various release cycles. So it seems that
in general a postgis release should be ok with any geos release that was
respectable 6 months before the postgis release.
So if you want to say "postgis 2.2 will not be released until 6 months
after the release of a GEOS 3.4 release (which is not known to have
serious problems*)", then I don't see any issue. One tricky bit is that
often release dates move out, so that puts 2.2 in the indefinite future.
* by which I mean if there's a 3.4, and the vibe is "stay away", and
3.4.1 is ok, then it's 3.4.1's date that counts.
