I feel Bas pain, been there...
Today's "opensource" offer often suffer from lack of community, and
GitHub has a role here (lack of mailing lists often reduces the sense
of a "community" and it takes a community to find a "competent
successor"). Often GitHub-only projects end up being community-less
orphans.
That said, I don't see any risk in having our own implementation of an
algorithm which we know works.
