Main reason we had it was for folks who didn't or couldn't install raster part.  Now that 3.0 has raster as a separate extension from geometry/geography we have less of a need for that.

It's still easier to do regress testing with the non-extension piece though and much of our regression testing still does non-extension because of the issue of the extension files having to be installed to test (or is there an easy way around that?)

That said - no reason we need to keep it in the docs.  We can just flush out any mention of non-extension aside from telling people how to move from non-extension install to extension install.
