Comment:

 I think I had the same issue when doing a ubuntu upgrade recently but
 forget how I got around the gdal issue.

 Anyway as you said it's a gdal install issue nothing to do with your
 patch.  I'll take a look at your patch and commit if it passes my 9.4-9.6
 tests.
