Comment:

 I'll commit in a bit.  Pushing this to 2.4 for now since it's my
 understanding it's a performance boost and not a bug.  May consider
 backporting later after I've done some tests that Andrey Borodin
 suggested.  I'll keep this open until I've done some of those tests.
