 okay evidentally I've got some other wackiness going on here.

 When I switched back to proj 4.9.3, all was good .  But if I go to proj
 6.1.0 back to crashing hell.

 I think it might be some sort of mix thing since as I recall last I tested
 on my local pc, 6.1.0 worked fine (assuming I get my paths right)

 So might be my GDAL that's the culprit.
