It sounds like when you exported from AI to AutoCAD you ended up 
with a "block". That's AutoCAD speak for a group of objects. If you 
have AutoCAD, use the "explode" command to un-group the block. 
Lacking AutoCAD, look for block related options in the AI export 
options.
