I found it interesting in the ESRI International User
Conference 2004 Preconference Survey Q & A, Question
#11 under "Software Strategy" reads as follows:

Q: What is ESRI's approach to open source software?

ESRI is not an open source vendor. Our engineering
methodology and business model is built on a different
paradigm. Nevertheless, we appreciate the spirit of
the open source movement and recognize that a number
of our users have chosen to employ various open source
software technologies. ESRI actively uses and
engineers its products to interoperate with a variety
of open source technologies including Linux, Apache,
and Python. We also publish elements of our code as
open source such as the interoperability connectors as
well as supporting ArcScripts on the Web for
downloading by developers and users. In addition, we
provide the Python source code for many of the ArcGIS
9 geoprocessing tools. Especially interesting are the
Spatial Statistics tools, which continue to evolve
through contributions from our users.

A strategic platform that ESRI intends to support for
ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Engine is the combined open
source technologies of Linux-Apache-Java.

ESRI also closely monitors the open source DBMS
environments such as PostgreSQL and MySQL. MySQL
technologies are not currently ready for spatial data
management. We will continue to evaluate it. However,
we are actively evaluating support for PostgreSQL and
would like your feedback.
