[postgis-users] Problem with installation

You need to download the source for postgresql, and compile and install it from 
that source. Then, untar the postgis source into the contrib directory of the 
_postgresql_source_directory_ - this is not /usr/share/pgsql/contrib/!! It 
should be something like /usr/local/src/postgresql-7.4.1/

You have probably installed postgresql using an RPM - this is not going to work 
with the postgis source install. There are some postgis RPMs available if you 
have a compatible version of Linux.
