[postgis-users] install help- postgis

I am trying to install postgis on a redhat server. I did these ( as per 
instructions on PostGIS site):

cd contrib 
gunzip postgis-0.8.0.tar.gz 
tar xvf postgis-0.8.0.tar 
cd postgis-0.8.0 
make 

Now, make gives the following error:
#make:*** Norule to make target `../../configure', needed by 
`../../config.status'. Stop.

I tried both versions .8.0 and 0.8.1

Can any one point me where am I going wrong?
