I'm not shure to understand your request ... but one thing is shure
you don't need to downgrade your postgis installation (indeed we begin
the postgis ebuild only for the 1.0.0 release).

Could you add this line to your /etc/portage/package.keywords :
dev-db/postgis ~x86 ? (if some problems come from the postgresql
version please add this line to your   /etc/portage/package.unmask :
>=dev-db/postgresql-8.0.0 - or an upper version if you prefer ... )
-- Maybe not .../

You could probably use your allready installed postgresql version
without problem (the tests I've made use the 8.0.1-r2 version).
