I agree with strk:
As an end user, I prefer beeing warned and taught about this kind of
problems (in the documentation, in a tutorial), directly linked to the
nature of geographic data, instead of having clever functions handling
this complexity for me.

I see Postgis as a core system, on which applications and extensions
can be built to provide more specific behaviour, like automatic
reprojections.
