Both DarwinPort and Fink use a privately maintained directory tree to
manage, so that'll be something to get over. DarwinPorts uses /opt/
local by default. They do that so they can manage all the files in
there, unlike with /usr/local, which is a dumping ground.

DarwinPort does seem to keep the packages more up to date than Fink.
DarwinPorts is completely up to date I believe in Postgresql and
Postgis.

If I want a custom package, I just use what the packaging system
provides and tweak it for my use. It saves a lot of time and effort
in building everything myself.

Regards,
Blair
