[postgis-users] upgrade protocol

what precautions/steps do I have to take when upgrading either
PostGres or PostGIS? (my OS is Mac OS X 10.4.x for both client and
server -- two instances of the software).

>From what I understand --

1. login as postgres
2. dump the database
3. shutdown PostGres
4. install upgrade
5. mv old data to a backup directory
6. make new data directory
7. initialize new data directory
8. start PostGres
9. reload the previously dumped data

am I doing ok here? too paranoid? not enough?
