[postgis-users] Postgis 2.0: geodetic coordinates support

Hi,

During a survey comparing Oracle Spatial, PostGIS and MySQL Spatial,
for the French Space Agency (CNES), it appears that a important
difference between Oracle Spatial and PostGIS is the geodetic
coordinate support.

The CNES is very interested in adding this support into PostGIS, by
funding a project for that.

What would be, according to you, the efforts needed to integrate such
a support into postgis, and not only some functions working on
spheroids ?

Would it require to define geodetic index, would it be possible to
switch to polar coordinate system when dealing with geocentric SRS,
like Oracle does ?

Any clue would help us to define the steps necessary to integrate this
support, and the the time/effor it will take.
