Use PostGIS to hold your Mapserver TILEINDEX of your images, and store 
your images on disk.
Use Mapserver WMS to pull AOI from this "master image" managed by the 
TILEINDEX.

Images from Source -> Disk Archive -> Insert metadata record into 
PostGIS -> use TILEINDEX in Mapserver to reference particular images -> 
web map etc.
