[postgis-users] Text in ShapeFile

By an accompanying <filename>.dbf which has the same file name as the .shp
file.  Note, on non-windows these file names need to be the same case for
many drivers.  Any program such as a spreadsheet that can read the dbase
format can open these files for viewing purposes. The other files with the
.shp file like .shx are indexes for random access support.

I have discovered there needs to be separate shapefiles for points, lines 
and polygons.

How is text handled in a shapefile - or is it?
