Hi,

We do our own from source install of Postgres/Proj/Geos outside of rpms
(to /usr/local
or /opt) as we found that using the packaged versions sometimes lead to
issues with depenencies.
For example, we are now able to deploy multiple instances of
Postgres/PostGIS (/opt/postgres/8.2
and /opt/postgres/8.3) to facilitate testing/migration.

I used the packaged postgres init.d script as the basis of my own.
The init.d script will use initdb to create the database in which
ever directory DATADIR points to (have a look at
/etc/sysconfig/postgresql)
if it does not already exist.

Cheers,

Antti

Subject: [postgis-users] Re: Installing PostGIS on Suse

Hey, thanks for the heads up.

I tried to play with the settings in the Makefile and made experiments
with symlinks ... nothing worked out. So I uninstalled postgresql and
reinstalled everything from the GEO repository (thanks Brent!). Since I
am on Suse 10.2, everything should work out fine. And it seems as if it
is ... rpm copied the binaries like psql into the /usr/bin directory.
Sorry, but where can I find a start-script for postgresql now, where is
the data-folder? I am not able to locate anything of the installation
except the stuff in the /usr/bin dir.

Thanks a lot!!!
