[postgis-users] ESRI 9.3 & PostGIS

Mark,
Based on talking with people and reading their experiences, I think to
use even the PostGIS geometry using ESRI's ArcGIS desktop support
you need to have an ArcGIS server license similar to if you wanted to
use Oracle Spatial SDE or SQL Server (minus express). But you can have
the service turned
off if you are just using the PostGIS geometry according to Dave
Bouman's note, so then I'm not quite sure what you are paying for if you
have to pay.
I get the impression just the additional functions that ArcGIS installs
into PostgreSQL to allow ArcGIS desktop to talk to PostGIS/PostgreSQL.

I think they took away the direct connect thingy they use to have or
rather you have to pay for it now under the umbrella of ArcSDE.  I could
be wrong though.  All that licensing stuff is very confusing and  I've
been too busy with other things (like statistical analyse of data) to be
bothered with figuring out how ArcGIS works or is licensed.

I could be wrong though, but that's the impression I have gotten.

If you use something like ZigGIS, that works purely using ArcGIS apis
and doesn't rely on SDE or the functions ESRI installs and will work for
9.1+ but then you are paying for per desktop instance install as opposed
to a server install. 

Well maybe somebody who actually knows something will chime in :).

Thanks for setting up that page on the wiki - that's a help.

I have some very basic questions, from the perspective of a non-ArcSDE
user. I understand the zigGis and QGIS, etc options, but having just
installed Arc9.3, I hoped to view/edit PostGIS data via ArcMap. I
think what I want is closest to Paolo's scenario #3:

I have read various posts indicating that if I want to access PostGIS
data at all in ArcMap, I should be running (ArcGIS server and ?)
ArcSDE. I cannot easily separate the help on using Postgres SDE vs
PostGIS; it sounds, first of all, that either requires Postgres ArcSDE
be installed, and that my spatial data be in a database called "sde".
Correct? I've only been reading through the help for an hour or two,
so I may have missed something.

All the help at ESRI on PostGIS data is under the ArcGisServer help -
do I also have to run ArcGIS server, or is it just listed there
because that's the main target audience/intended use?
