Thanks Regina. I blew away the entire /usr/local/pgsql and started
from scratch. It all seems to be fine now. I was misled by the
abbreviated instructions write on top of the tin

see the sidebar... that refers to lwpostgis.sql instead of
src/postgist/postgis.sql

Perhaps that should be corrected.
